About Estate Anastasiou

The Anastasiou family has been farming in the valley of ancient Nemea for generations. The family had always made wine for themselves, learning the secrets from the locals and passing them on from one generation to the next. In 1950 Georgios Anastasiou planted the family's first official vineyard in the shadow of Apessantiou Mountain, setting the course for the foundation of the family winery in 1954. His sons, Nikos and Kyriakos Anastasiou continue to lead the company today with their young children often trailing behind in the vineyards and members of the extended being pressed into service at harvest time.

The Anastasious continue to follow the traditions of the region which have their roots in ancient times. The site of ancient Nemea lies in a valley surrounded by gentle slopes at an elevation roughly 400 meters above sea level. Its red soil and microclimate are so ideally suited to the cultivation of grapes that it was noted by Homer as being full of vines.

Nemea is best known, in fact is the designated AOC, for the deeply colored Agiorgitiko varietal grape, most often used to make a rich and supple red wine. From this grape, the Anastasious produce a robust and deeply pink rose, especially favored by the locals during the winter months. They have also experimented successfully with other varietals not so commonly seen in the area — the golden Assyrtiko which in their hands becomes a lovely white wine redolent of pears and the rose colored Roditis which yields a crisp and citrusy white. In their vineyard on the slopes of Mt. Kitherona on the mainland across the Bay of Corinth, they grow the Malvasia varietal know since the Venetian era for the aromatic white wine that it produces.

The current generation of Anastasious have skillfully integrated tradition with modern winemaking equipment and technology to bring a renewed vitality to their family estate.

The Wines

Greeks enjoy nothing more than a leisurely afternoon or evening spent with friends and family and good food and wine gathered around a fire in the winter and moving out onto city terraces overlooking the sea and into country gardens during the warmer months. As a result, Greek wines tend to be very food friendly and versatile, pairing well with a vast array of dishes. For the same reason, they also tend to be relatively low in alcohol.

The wines made by the Anastasious are in keeping with this tradition. It comes as no surprise that they pair beautifully with Greek cuisine. The backbone of Greek cuisine is ingredients of the freshest and highest quality often prepared in the simplest of ways. Consequently, it follows that wines made by the Anastasious and other Greek winemakers can make a very congenial pairing with a wide range of other cuisines.

The crispness of the Roditis complements fried chicken and Mexican ceviche alike. We intend to bring it along the next time we are invited for a cheese fondue by our French and Swiss friends. We like to drink the rose with spicy octopus macaroni while our sommelier friend drinks it with his chili and it is also what we reach for whenever grilling an all American burger or a Greek lamb chop. We love the Malvasia not only with the spicy sizzling catfish prepared by our favorite Japanese chef but also with fish on the grill Greek style drizzled with olive oil, lemon juice and pinch of oregano.

Estate Anastasiou Roditis is a crisp and refreshing white wine with good acidity, pale yellow color with green highlights and aromas of lemon, jasmine and citrus with notes of tropical fruits. This wine is especially good with cheese, seafood and shellfish in particular. (pronounced roh-DEE-tees)

Estate Anastasiou Agiorgitiko Rose is a deep rose color with mauve highlights and aromas of fresh berries, roses and cherries and fruits of the woods. This unusual and robust rose is ideal year round. It is outstanding with grilled and roasted meats, burgers, lamb and spicy pasta dishes. (pronounced ah-yohr-YEE-tee-koh)

Estate Anastasiou Malvasia is an aromatic and distinctive full bodied white with vivid aromas of exotic fruits made from grapes grown on the slopes of Mt. Kitherona, the mythical birthplace of the wine god Dionysos. This wine is made from a specifically Greek strain of the Malvasia varietal — Malvasia di candia aromatika. It pairs well with all types of seafood and is excellent with spicy dishes.
