About Estate Anastasiou
The Anastasiou family has been farming in the valley of ancient Nemea for generations. The family had always made wine for themselves, learning the secrets from the locals and passing them on from one generation to the next. In 1950 Georgios Anastasiou planted the family's first official vineyard in the shadow of Apessantiou Mountain, setting the course for the foundation of the family winery in 1954. His sons, Nikos and Kyriakos Anastasiou continue to lead the company today with their young children often trailing behind in the vineyards and members of the extended being pressed into service at harvest time.
The Anastasious continue to follow the traditions of the region which have their roots in ancient times. The site of ancient Nemea lies in a valley surrounded by gentle slopes at an elevation roughly 400 meters above sea level. Its red soil and microclimate are so ideally suited to the cultivation of grapes that it was noted by Homer as being full of vines.
Nemea is best known, in fact is the designated AOC, for the deeply colored Agiorgitiko varietal grape, most often used to make a rich and supple red wine. From this grape, the Anastasious produce a robust and deeply pink rose, especially favored by the locals during the winter months. They have also experimented successfully with other varietals not so commonly seen in the area — the golden Assyrtiko which in their hands becomes a lovely white wine redolent of pears and the rose colored Roditis which yields a crisp and citrusy white. In their vineyard on the slopes of Mt. Kitherona on the mainland across the Bay of Corinth, they grow the Malvasia varietal know since the Venetian era for the aromatic white wine that it produces.
The current generation of Anastasious have skillfully integrated tradition with modern winemaking equipment and technology to bring a renewed vitality to their family estate.
